How to Know What Kind of Furnace You Have

There are a few reasons you might want to know what kind of heating system or furnace you have. Maybe you’re calling your HVAC technician and trying to explain a problem. Maybe you want to compare your system to another that might be more efficient or cost-effective. Whatever the reason, we can help you determine what kind of heating system and furnace you have.

What Kind of Heating System Do You Have?

First things first, you need to figure out if what you’re looking at is a furnace or another type of heating system. There are several options:

  • Boiler: Boilers are old technology. They heat up water and pump the water to radiators, from which the heat disperses. You’ll know you have this heating system if you have radiators.
  • Mini-split: Also called heat pumps, these systems are “split” in that they have an indoor and outdoor unit. The indoor unit (or units) is installed directly to your wall. The outdoor unit should be just outside your home, and it typically has a label calling it a heat pump or mini-split.
  • Radiant floor: If you can feel the heat from your home coming up through the floor, you have a radiant floor heating system. Small pipes carry heated liquid or air through the floor, and it naturally moves upward.
  • Geothermal heat pumps: Geothermal heat pumps use the stable temperature in the ground to regulate the temperature in your home. These systems are typically clearly labeled.

What Type of Furnace Do You Have?

So, you know that you have a furnace, but that’s not all you want to know. How do you tell what furnace you have? Here are some tips:

  • Brand name: The brand name of the furnace can give you a lot of information. At least, you’ll know what company to call if you can’t find any more information.
  • Model name and number: Somewhere on the unit a model name and number should be listed. If you can find this, you can usually just search for the model online and learn a lot about it.
  • Call the manufacturer: If you can’t find the model or number, you can call your manufacturer. They can either tell you where to find them or help you identify the unit from other features.
  • Call your HVAC technician: Your HVAC technician may have a record of what they installed in your home, or they may be able to help you identify your model by other means.
